Blue Marlin

New Zealand is a paradise for blue marlin enthusiasts! You can find these magnificent creatures in the coastal waters, particularly in the northern half of the North Island where we operate from Auckland’s west coast and at The Three Kings Islands.

Blue Marlin Information:

The best time to catch blue marlin is during the warmer months, typically from January to April, when the water temperature is between 20-27°C (68-80.6°F).
However, if you’re looking to break records, focus on April and May, as 13 out of 18 world records were caught during these months

Blue Marlin growth rate:

Blue marlin may grow to be more than 12 feet long and may weigh up to 2,000 pounds. Female blue marlin grow larger than males and may live 20 years. Male blue marlin reach 7 feet in length and may live up to 10 years. They grow fast and may reach 3 to 6 feet in the first 1 to 2 years of life.
The average blue marlin weighs around 70-120 kg, but don’t be surprised if you encounter ones reaching up to 492.4 kg, like the heaviest ever recorded in NZ.

Black Marlin

In New Zealand, black marlin is a rare catch,
but they usually arrive in coastal waters during summer and autumn, feeding on the abundance of bait fish around the upper half of the North Island.
The most productive months seem to be February and March.

Black Marlin Information:

Not to be confused with Blue Marlin, a more slender fish, Black Marlin is the same color, but usually larger around the head area. Some say that this bulkier build is what makes them harder to catch. In fact, they have shown remarkable endurance and strength and have proven not to tire out as easily as Blue Marlin.
Also, you can tell a Black Marlin from a Blue Marlin by whether they fold in their pectoral fins. Blue Marlin usually fold in their pectoral fins when jumping, while Black Marlin don’t.

Black Marlin growth rate:

Black marlin are known to grow rapidly, especially during their first few years of life.
Studies have shown that they can grow up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) in length within the first year. The average growth rate of black marlin is approximately 20-30 cm (7.9-11.8 inches) per year.
They can reach maturity at around 2-5 years of age, depending on factors such as food availability and environmental conditions.
Black marlin can grow up to 4.6 meters (15.1 feet) in length and weigh up to 750 kg (1,653 lbs).
