Swordfish

Swordfish Fishing Charters (Gladiators of the Sea)

World record size swordfish are commonly caught in New Zealand. A commercial fisherman caught a New Zealand swordfish in March 2024 that weighed 400kg trunked and gutted. Its gross weight was potentially bigger than the IGFA world record of 520kg.
New Zealand is the number one place in the world for swordfish fishing. Swordfish in New Zealand are both prolific and huge.

Swordfish are caught all year-round in New Zealand with the peak season from December to August.  Te Ariki Nui, MV Ata Rangi and MV Pelagic all take specialised swordfish fishing charters. We target them between 300 to 900m deep during the day and then surface to 100m down during the night. You can choose between a day trip for swordfish or a multiday adventure. On a multi day trip you can also target Marlin, Tuna and all other species.
Including exotic destination’s like The Three Kings Islands is a great way to experience the trip of a life time and be in with a chance of a monstrous swordfish.
New Zealand Swordfish congregate on deep water shelfs, trenches, seamounts all around New Zealand. We specialised in the very productive upper north Island for these species from the Bay Of Plenty and Kawhia to The Three Kings Islands.
